Best Practices When Using Classroom Technology

Overview

Practicing best practices in the use of classroom technology for students yields a multitude of benefits that enhance the learning experience. By understanding how to utilize classroom technology thoughtfully and effectively, educators can create a dynamic and engaging learning environment that caters to all students. Additionally, it promotes accessibility and inclusivity, accommodating students with diverse abilities and backgrounds. In essence, adhering to best practices in classroom technology empowers educators to harness the full potential of technology as a powerful tool for enhancing education and preparing students for success.

There are several best practices for how to use the technology in a way that promotes accessibility and inclusivity for all students, including the following:

  • Use the microphones equipped in most classrooms
  • Turn on subtitles during PowerPoint presentations
  • Turn on closed captions when watching a video or multimedia file in class
  • Use descriptive language when presenting content that is more visual (such as images, charts, or graphics)
  • Use accessible fonts in materials being presented on the screens
  • Write legibly and use dark-colored markers
  • Offer alternative formats of materials being shared
  • Share the materials ahead of time in Canvas for students to access before being presented in class
