Information

Hardware

Computers are complex with numerous components and peripherals that can experience issues.  Learning and Technology Services is available to help get your UWEC-managed computer back up and running.  If we determine that the issue is the result of a failure of an internal component, we may need to work with the vendor to get the device repaired.

Software

If you are looking to install computer on your UWEC-managed office computer, you might be able to do so without submitting a ticket.  LTS has approved and packaged numerous applications for install by faculty and staff.  Open Software Center (Windows) or Self Service (macOS) and search for the application by name.  If it is available, simply click on install.  Depending on the size of the application, it may take several minutes to install.  For more information, please see the Installing Software on Office Computers knowledge base article.

Troubleshooting

There are countless issue that may arise with computers, but there are a few basic steps that may be taken with many types of computer issues.

  • Restart the computer.  It may sound cliché, but restarting a computer may resolve numerous problems.  Restarting computers may allow pending software, operating system and driver updates to apply.  Restarting may kill processes that were hanging and free up system resources.
  • Check for Operating System Updates.  Pending updates may cause various issues.  OS updates may also provide fixes for known issues.

Details to Provide in Ticket or in Phone Call

  • Nature of the request or issue - provide as much detail as possible
  • Is the LED on the power button/front of the device flashing in a pattern?  The light might be amber in color or may switch between white and amber.
  • What troubleshooting have you done so far?  What were the results?  Knowing what you have tried and the results can be very helpful as we work to diagnose the issue.
  • Building and room number
  • Office computers - Computer name or asset tag.  The asset tag is a white label that includes a bar code and the words "Property of UW-Eau Claire."  The number on that tag identifies your computer.  It will be affixed to the bottom of laptops or on the top or side of most desktops.  Please do not provide the asset tag from your monitor or docking station unless you are also experiencing issues with that device.
  • Classroom computers - Please provide the computer name.  This is on a large white label affixed to the top of the computer.
  • What is the operating system (Windows or macOS) of your device?
  • If a classroom, may LTS stop in during class to troubleshoot?
